Thai Fruit Primer

Longan (Lam-yai)

Scientific name: Euphoria longana L.
Season: June to August

Grown extensively in the northern Thailand, especially in the Chiang Mai area. Longan are loved by Thais, who eagerly await the small brown fruit found in markets throughout the country from June to August.

The crisp skin is easy to remove and the white flesh has a texture and sweetness similar to the lychee. Longan generally eaten fresh at room temperature, but the canned fruit is often served over ice as a dessert.
