French aircraft design was closely linked with their early aviators who went on to design military aircraft. France aircraft companies also sold licenses to other countries. I the middle period of the war the industry was plagued by several scandals and some bad designs. Later it went on to build some of the most widely used aircraft in the war. The French concentrated on the production of a smaller number of aircraft types in the late war refining these designs.
