Lord enlisted in the U.S. Army but was discharged from the 3rd Texas Infantry when it was learned that he was too young for military service. With an altered birth certificate, he went to Canada where he joined the Royal Flying Corps. After completing his training in England, Lord joined 79 Squadron in France. Flying the Sopwith Dolphin, he and four other pilots in the squadron became aces.
