Cobby joined the Australian Flying Corps on December 22, 1916. Assigned to 71 Squadron, he arrived in France in 1918 and scored 29 victories flying the Sopwith Camel. A cunning and aggressive pilot, Cobby was the highest scoring ace in the Australian Flying Corps and the only Australian credited with downing 5 balloons.
